 | | HUKKA products are made of pure Finnish soapstone which comes from North Karelia and has been tested by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (test result RAM 0871/90) and approved for use with foodstuffs. |
North Karelian soapstone originated about 2.5 billion years ago under an
ancient chain of mountains. Intense pressure formed a special type of stone with unique
heat and cold storing properties. Soapstone is more effective than any other type of stone
in this respect and retains heat or cold for long periods. It is consequently an excellent
material for various practical items. Soapstone heated in an oven can be used to cook food
or to keep warm. If soapstone is placed in a freezer, after only a short while it can be
used to keep food or drinks cold for long periods even in warm conditions. Soapstone
products are also dishwasher proof.
The soapstone we use consists mainly of talc (40-50%) and magnesite
(40-50%) plus small amounts of other materials (penninite 5-8%). It has a specific gravity
of 3, which means that 1 cubic meter of soapstone weighs 3,000 kilograms.
